Abstract

Compulsory monogamy (also known as mono-normativity) is the system of cultural power which rewards the monogamous and retaliates against non-monogamy, such that deviating from the monogamous norm becomes unthinkable, untenable, and indefensible. While social stigma and legalities are major enforcement tools of compulsory monogamy, this session will put those aside and instead focus on conceptual / ideological enforcement mechanisms of compulsory monogamy, including: de-authorization, conceptual appropriation, false foreclosure of possibilities, jealous conditioning, and the spectacle of non-monogamous failure.
