Abstract

This paper provides an oveview of the non-monogamous and/or polyamorous relationships in an Australian semi-structured interview project with seventy-eight culturally, sexually and geographically diverse women, aged nineteen to sixty-five, who were in monogamous, open and polyamorous marital and de facto relationships with bisexual men.

The themes and issues to be covered include the border existences, boundary demarcations, devastating oppressions, exhilarating affirmations and innovative negotiations of the women and their partners as they relinquish restrictive monogamist relationship-codes, or ‘design’, maintain and/or regain healthy sexual, emotional and social non-monogamous relationships. These journeys also entailed navigating a route through sometimes converging, sometimes conflicting external heteronormative, homonormative and monogamist codes, such as those of straight peer groups, gay communities, ethnic and religious communities.
